Design Context Publication | Written content

To get the correct content for my publication I chose to produce an interview for myself, something which would be well sued in a magazine, here are the following question I asked and answer myself in relation to my design practice.

Context of practice - Publication

Cover - Favourite photograph of the year
Inside cover - Introduction

I CONSIDER MYSELF AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER WITH A HUGE INTEREST IN FASHION, RETAIL BRANDING, DIGITAL DESIGN, PRINT, PRODUCT AND PHOTOGRAPHY. I AM A YOUNG CREATIVE, WITH AMBITION OF SUCCEEDING IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY. I ENJOY EXPERIMENTING, LEARNING NEW SKILLS, MEETING NEW PEOPLE AND HAVING FUN.

Contents - What inspires me?

This short magazine is a formative and visual display of what inspires me to create. The first issue states how fashion is my main focus when producing work and the series of questions I asked myself is what sums me up as a creative, a young individual and a designer ready for the graphics and fashion industry.

FASHION

Style

Why is style important to my practice?
A sense of personal taste incorporated into my design practice gives my work a touch of individuality.

Who is my style icon?
Kate Moss, I love bohemian fashion.

What is my favourite retail brand?
ASOS, due to the idea of them being dedicated to the 'Digital Experience' of online shopping.

"Style is an important aspect of my practice, whether it be from my own personal taste or current trends. "

Shopping

Why does shopping inspire my practice in design?
Firstly, I love shopping online. Especially online retailers such as ASOS, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and Zara. Purely because I like their website layout, functionality and navigation system when browsing for clothes.

How does shopping online help my practice?
When browsing online, I take into account the fact I am a consumer aiming to purchase an item from a retail store online. If the process is easy and pleasant to do, I take note of experience and refer back to it when designing my own digital experiences.

Retail Design

What i like most about retail design?
Interior aspects of stores are what I am drawn to when designing retail projects. I like the idea of producing a concept from scratch, and often take inspiration from stores I visit myself.

Which Is my favourite retail store?
Topshop. The current interior layout and visual identity is exactly the type of design i enjoy creating myself. Dalziel and Pow are the creative agency who develop the above retail concept.

Brands (High street)

What about branding?
Fashion brands are massively inspirational to me as I want to be a designer in the fashion sector.

Which brands are most prominent to my practice?
Brands like Zara, Bershka and Pull and Bear, all of which are owned by the fashion retail group - Inditex. A company which I believe I would enjoy working for.

FASHION | LABELS | BRANDS

Asos
Topshop
Urban Outfitters
Zara
River Island
H&M
Textile Federation

I like the idea of working for a company which is operated around high street fashion, current trends, and is fashion forward, ASOS appeals to me as the brands target market is '20 somethings'. I am of that age and enjoy everything about our generation in terms of fashion and design.

Fashion Houses

(high end)
Perfume and packaging
Cosmetics
Advertisements
Faces

What about high end fashion?
I've always had a huge interest in fashion, perfume, cosmetics and advertisements, it was only until I started the Graphic Design course I realised that I could be someone who produced design work for any of the stated areas in fashion.

Working for a fashion house, is it for me?
I would love to work for a fashion label which involves designing branding and packaging, being involved in event organising, producing promotional material for fashion weeks along with creative advertising.

Who are my favourite high end brands?
Chloe, Chanel, Jimmy Choo - Not because i have expensive taste in clothing, shoes or handbags, but because I love the brand logos, perfumes and packaging designs.

Trends

Why are trends important to my practice?
I often look on websites such as Pantone, WGSN, Stylesight, Vogue, PatternBank and Trendstop to keep up to date with the latest trend reports, colour schemes and prints in the fashion and graphics industry.

Why do trends in fashion relate to graphic design for me?
I consider myself as a graphic designer with a huge interest in fashion, digital design, retail and print. So being aware of what new and on trend is a way of keeping up to date with the world of design.

Which is my favourite source for print inspiration?
I often use online sources such as Patternbank and Patternity for print, pattern, graphics and photography.

Why is surface pattern design incorporated into my practice?
I enjoy exploring many areas of design, in terms of graphics I am focused on producing design digitally - this avenue of graphics has led me to digital print design for textile and garment decoration too. Over the past year I have found my niche in graphic design and i've developed more interests and skills in other sectors.

Which is my favourite colour of the year?
Pantone 9324 - Pastel uncoated pink, a colour which seems to reoccur in work which I have produced this year.

DREAM JOB

Perks of designing for a magazine: Meeting PRs, photographers and stylists, researching and developing photoshoot concepts, styling and commissioning, attending bi-annual fashion shows in London, Milan and New York.

Blogs
Favourites

Why are blogs important to my practice?
Everyday I blog the development of my work on my blogger, this is something I intend on carrying on after college. My plan is to set up my own website and blog which I can update weekly, filled with photography, print and graphics.

Which blogs have inspired my practice?
Blogmilk is a personal favourite - The minimalist style, and content always offers great photography, fashion styling, contemporary packaging for retail along with appreciable colour palettes.

Why are blogs useful for inspiration?
Minimalissimo and Blogmilk are the two I visit daily, the content, layout, photographic style and taste in design is exactly what spurs me to design my own work. I love minimalism in fashion graphics, and often find inspirational designers and studios linked from the blogs.

TRAVEL

Visiting places

London
Paris
Asia

Why does travel inspire my practice?
I enjoy visiting new places mainly for photographic purposes. A recent trip to Paris was specifically for photography and research, learning about a culture I had never been part of was definitely inspiring, enough so I produced one of my favourite briefs this year from the documentary imagery I took whilst there.

Why is travel an aspect of my practice?
I love research, and if it means traveling to another city or country, i'm up for the trip. I enjoy documenting places I've been to, things I have learned and what has inspired me through my practice whether its an event i've attended, an exhibition i've seen or a person i've talked to, either way traveling is a huge part of my practice.

Would I like to travel with work?
Definitely. My aim is to find my feet in the direction of design I am heading and hope that a job takes me to new places to learn more things about design, culture and life.
